Western civilization has seen periods of significant power and influence over many centuries, particularly from the rise of the Roman Empire around 27 BC to the present day. Key phases include the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Age of Enlightenment, and the Industrial Revolution, with notable dominance from the 16th to the 20th centuries. While it's challenging to pinpoint an exact number of years, one could argue that Western civilization has been a dominant force for over 2,000 years, particularly in terms of cultural, political, and economic influence globally.

Western civilization is not based on fear, it only seems like that sometimes. Fear is a human tool used to gain power; you will find it used in national settings, international settings, and even at home for some. Western civilization is no different than any sector of the world that is run by people. Western civilization has many positive elements as well; it is full of people who work hard, take care of their families, support their communities, donate their money, their time, their talents to worthwhile causes. Not really like you see us on TV and in movies. I have lived in the US for many decades and from my perspective, a more powerful force than fear in our society is commercialism and consumerism. Many nations around the world have had the power of the US thrust upon them causing fear; but those that fear US power should also fear the commercialism. It's a real spoiler.
Ancient Rome's importance to western civilization came from the ideas or concepts it gave to us. There are many and most students of history will come up with many answers. Certainly among the highest in importance is the concept of personal rights and all personal rights encompass.
