Both MacArthur and Nimitz knew the major islands held by the Japanese in the Pacific Ocean had to be taken by the US. They developed an Island Hopping strategy. They would skip every other island they came to (there were too many small islands to deal with). This would cut off supply lines to the islands they skip, lessen casualties, and save a lot of time.
Japan had made the error of not devoting enough of its army to the Pacific Islands. They also failed to have enough aircraft carriers. This gave the US an advantage.

General Nathanael Greene's strategy at the Battle of Camden differed from General Horatio Gates' approach primarily in his emphasis on mobility and attrition rather than direct confrontation. While Gates led a traditional frontal assault that resulted in a significant defeat, Greene adopted a more flexible strategy, focusing on retreating and regrouping rather than risking a decisive engagement. Greene's tactics aimed to wear down British forces over time, leveraging the advantages of local knowledge and support from militia, contrasting sharply with Gates' more conventional and rigid tactics.
He knew that it would be a long war, and that the strategy ought to be long-term, with effective blockading of the South, to squeeze the life out of the Confederacy. This was derided as the 'Anaconda Plan'. But it was actually the basis of the strategy the Union eventually adopted. Very few others realized it would be a long war, though some letters Sherman wrote to Southern friends at the beginning suggest that he was one of the few.

The Allies attempted to reagin control of the Pacific by using a strategy of island hopping. Basically, they would capture islands of strategic value, dodging arounds those that weren't that important. The Allies adopted General Douglas MacArthur's strategy to reach Japan, which was the capture of the Philippines and then Okinawa, over Nimitz's strategy, the capture of the Marianas and then Formosa. Eventually, the importance of the Marianas as a base for logistical and aerial support was realized, leading to it's capture, and Iwo Jima, which could serve as a base for escort fighters for B-24s, 25s and 29s coming from Saipan (in the Marianas) as well as an airfield for premature landing of planes and a possible staging area for an invasion of Japan, was soon captured by the Allies. From then on, a strategy of heavy Bombing of Japan before an ultimate invasion occurred . This ended with Japan's surrender to the Allies.
