Assimilation is probably not what exactly happened, in the sense that there was little or no awareness of the qualities of their culture that came over with them. 19th century schooling required them to dress and live as European cultures did, with new religion. language and values. Early schools were boarding schools, so that children left their families at young ages, losing language and skills that would have served them better later on the reservations.

Basically because the Native Americans were there first and liked their culture where it was. A number of aspects of European culture like land ownership were immoral according to the religious beliefs of Native Americans of that time period. Also, the settlers were very hostile and tried forcing their culture on others. If they had made inroads, set up schools according to Native American customs and let the kids keep their culture, it would have been different.

It might be hard for a Native American to learn white peoples' culture because there can be significant differences in values, traditions, and worldviews. Native Americans have distinct cultural practices and a deep connection to their ancestral heritage, which may make it challenging to immerse fully into a different cultural framework. Additionally, historical trauma and the ongoing effects of colonialism can create barriers to understanding and engaging with white culture.
The pioneers began killing thousands of buffalo, on the Native Americans land. Thousands had already died from the drought, disease, and the destruction of their habitat. The native Americans tried to preserve their way of life. They then signed agreements with the U.S, giving up some of their land in return for food and supplies and respect for their rights and their land forever. But these agreements were broken. The Native Americans turned to war, in the end, the U.S was too strong, and the Native Americans surrendered in 1886. Then, in the late 1800's the U.S forced Native Americans onto reservation. Then they passed the Dawes act in 1887.
missions were built and the europeans tried to convert the Indians though religion
Westward expansion had a negative impact on Native Americans. Their whole way of life was taken away from them, along with the freedoms they had always known. They were removed from their land and placed on small reservations. Families were separated, and much of their culture was lost as the government tried to assimilate them into the white ways of life.
They tried to change their culture and beliefs.
