Through known history, Korea has been mostly independent.

Majorly:

During the Ghengis Khan Mongolia period, Korea had a puppet monarchy.

During the 19th Century to WWII, Korea was colonized to Japanese masters.

But, otherwise, Korea has been pretty much independent.

The caveats are that Korea has been divided, united, chopped, glued together again, but Korean history consider this in-fighting between the Korean people, it isn't recorded as occupation. Also, when you see how large and close China is, you can understand that during various periods, Korea was subservient to China.

However, during the 5000 years that is considered as the history of the Korean race, the Korean peninsula has been under the rule of Koreans in one name or another for the whole period, even in the two cases mentioned above.
