There was a strong millennium movement that expected the world to end in the year 1000, or certain other years related to the new millennium.

The Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society (Jehovah's Witnesses) has had numerous prophecies of the end of the world since the nineteenth century, but all the prophecies seem to have failed.

One of the more recent and more fanciful predictions of the end of the world is for December 21st, 2012. When that date has passed by, there will be a new, even more convincing prophecy of the end of the world, to occur in just a few years time.
