Hiroshima was the city that was bombed for the first time in history with an atomic bomb. It killed around 100,000 people instantly and more afterward from radiation poison and injuries. Some died years later from cancer. This bomb was dropped to motivate the Japanese to surrender.
The second bombing of Nagasaki was the turning point to end the war. The second atomic bomb known as Fat Boy was dropped on Nagasaki two or three days after Hiroshima was bombed. Over 60,000 people died in that city.
Emperor Hirohito realized he had to surrender considering there was a probability the US could have more atomic bombs and totally destroy his empire. He had sworn to protect the throne and the Empire so he surrendered.
