the somme was extremely important to the triple entente, as it served as a strategic lookout for the Germans and as a way to pass the Hindenburg line for the entente. how ever, the line was nearly impenitrable, and reinforced with cement, making it nearly impenitrable. however, regardless of the minimal chance of victory, the british and french atempted to capture the vimy ridge on several different occasions, and it wasn't until Canada's army, led by Julian byng attempted to take it did tey suceed. (spelling might be a little off)
