This would help FOOL the local population that the then Prime Ministerial Candidate Mrs Gandhi was related to Mahatma Gandhi. In fact there is ABSOLUTELY no relation with the Gandhi Surname and Mrs Indira Gandhi. Indira's maiden name was Nehru and her married surname was Khan. So if she choose to keep her maiden name , she'd have sounded like Indira Nehru . The word Gandhi came out of nowhere . So the summarize , the reasons are :

Even today , the political campaign billboards feature Sonia Gandhi ( aka Maino ) , Rahul Gandhi ( aka Raul Maino ) and Mohandas Gandhi ( aka Mahatma Gandhi ) together .
No they were not related but Mohandas Gandhi Adopted Fer oz Khan . Who turned to Fer oz Gandhi only because Indira was a Hindu who could not marry a Muslim and Jawarlal Nehru din not want to be disgraced in front of the government because he was a true Hindu therefore Mohandas adopted him and got the two (Fer oz And Indira) married. so Jawarlal `s image wasn't ruined in front of the government.
so in the end they were related.
