The caste system existed before Buddhism, and it was condemned by the Buddha himself, so we can't really blame it on Buddhism specifically even though some people later used the Buddhist doctrine of reincarnation to justify the caste system, saying that high caste people were "obviously" being rewarded for living righeous previous lives, low caste people were "obviously" either being punished for unrighteousness in previous lives or being rewarded for being righteous animals in previous lives. Either way, people "deserved what they got", so the caste system was "obviously" working just fine.
