serve your contract to its end is the easiest and safest way to get out and have the benefits of being a vet, there are other ways to get out that will harm your job placements once out, oh and don't like on applications because of the employer finds out you lied about being in the military they can terminate you without warning and no un-employment checks will come your way.

There are 3 classes of ranks in the United States Army: Commission Officers, Warrant Officers, and Enlisted Soldiers.

Commissioned Officers have the ability to simply resign their commission at any time, however, there may be penalties if they joined with a specific time commitment in exchange for a scholarship or other monotary gains as part of their initial agreement for joining.

Warrant Officers operate similarly, however, they have a different process through which they must submit a packet requesting retirement.

Enlisted Soldiers both work on a contractual basis. If you get out of the Army by allowing your contract to expire, this is referred to as ETS, which stands for Estimated Time of Separation. If you are separated before your contract expires, it will have a different title for that type of separation based on the reason for early separation.

If it is a punitive separation, it may be catagorized as a Dishonorable Discharge, which is notorious for following an individual for the rest of their lives and affecting future employment and credit options. A punitive discharge for a lesser violation may also be catagorized as a General Discharge or a General: Other than Honorable. While the latter is a negatively viewed discharge by prospective employers and creditors, the soldier can submit a request 6 months after their discharge date to have it recatagorized as simply a General Discharge.

Medical Discharges are all classified as Honorable. A soldier can also be separated from the military for the cited reason "Failure to Adapt", which can be classified as either a General or Honorable Discharge. "Failure to Adapt" is one of the most commonly used discharge classifications for junior enlisted soldiers who have repeat minor violations of regulation in regard to the general military lifestyle, and for soldiers who consistantly fail to meet physical standards.

Initial Entry Soldiers may request a separation due to "Failure to Adapt" for the first 6 months that they are enlisted, and when granted, this separation is usually classified as a General Discharge. This time frame is usually equivilant to their Initial Entry Training and Advanced Individual Training.

Getting out of the Air Force....legally....involves a couple of scenarios....1. Serving out your enlistment; or, 2. Going Palace Chase (going Active to a National Guard unit of your choice) or another similar program that will get you out, but with a different contract. Get with your Unit Career Advisor...or, 1st Shirt...or, someone in Personnel that you trust - that sees these type of requests on a regular basis. They can possibly help you with up-to-date info on new programs that help the AF - while getting you out or closer to home.
