Because back then people thought that upper class people were more important than lower class people. And the people who made the Titanic probley made it easier for upper class people to get off the Titanic in case it sunk.

Mainly they went to get a better life in New York. In the upper class, especially first, it was more for holidays or business trips, but third class had a poor life in England or France and wanted to see if they could get a better life than their old one in New York.
It would depend on what class you were on the ship. The people in steerage had zero chance to live. They were locked into the hold of the ship. Moderate class had a better chance, but they would be last on a lifeboat. The upper class had the advantages in this case.
