They defended their rights which included property rights and States Rights by withdrawing from the Union in open rebellion. The rights they sought to defend by this action was the right to hold others forever in bondage as slaves. It seems strange that such activity was deemed essential to defend when only a small minority owned the slaves in Alabama. Most citizens were in fact small subsistence farmers who had nothing to gain and much to lose by going to war in support of the ideals of large cotton plantation interests.

Individual Rights are generally understood to mean the rights to life, liberty, property and voluntary contractual exchange. Individual rights traditionally encompass not only the right to control ones own life, liberty and property, but also to defend those rights.
