Columbus and his sailors detected they were near land after more than a month at sea primarily through observations of changes in the ocean's color and the presence of seaweed, specifically the Sargasso weed. They also noted the behavior of birds, as seabirds tend to fly toward land in search of food. Additionally, the sailors experienced shifts in the winds and currents, which indicated proximity to the coast. These signs collectively suggested that land was nearby, prompting their heightened anticipation.
He thought that he was near land because the birds flying overhead and some carved wood floating on the water.
The first land/island Christopher Columbus saw was San Salvador. That is the answer to that question. GOOD LUCK!
Columbus thought he was in India, and in his way to Asia, the land he founded was the island of Hispaniola, what we now know as Haiti, and Dominican Republic.

I do not believe that there would be Columbus Day because other than the discovery and settlement of "the new world" Columbus was not very extraordinary (from my research). He was born into a poor family and never received formal education. Also, his knowledge of geography, navigation, exploration, and settlement was learned by listening to old sailors in the Port of Genoa and in Maderia (where his wife inherited land).

On Christopher Columbus's first voyage in 1492, the reward for the crew member who first spotted land was a monetary prize of 10,000 maravedís, a significant sum at the time. This incentive was meant to motivate the sailors to keep a vigilant watch for land as they crossed the Atlantic. Ultimately, it was Rodrigo de Triana, a sailor on Columbus's ship, who first sighted land, leading to the discovery of the Bahamas.
