After graduating from the USMA at West point, Braxton Bragg was assigned to an artillery unit. He was in active service when the Mexican American War broke out. Bragg fought in all the major battles of that war was noticed by Jefferson Davis. Bragg distinguished himself during the 1847 Battle of Buena Vista. During a desperate part of the battle, soldiers under the command of Davis were in danger of being overwhelmed by Mexican forces. Bragg wheeled his artillery battery into position and fired upon the advancing Mexican troops, saving Davis and his men.
