George A. Custer chose to fight for the Union during the American Civil War primarily due to his strong commitment to the preservation of the Union and his opposition to slavery. Initially, he had a promising career in the military, and his leadership skills quickly earned him a reputation. Custer's decision was also influenced by his background and upbringing in Michigan, a Union state, which shaped his views and loyalties. Ultimately, his ambition and desire for recognition within the military played a significant role in his alignment with Union forces.
