King William's War had a profound effect on the people of Maine because of constant attacks from the French and Abenaki tribes. Many towns, such as Salmon Falls (South Berwick), Wells, York, Casco (Portland), Black Point (Scarborough), and Saco, lived in fear of an impending attack at any given time. Towns people had many of their relatives taken into captivity or killed as a result of this conflict. Land rights and the English pattern of settlement were much to blame for the violence in that area.
