The British took control of the territory that became New Jersey 1664 when they seized the Dutch fort of New Amsterdam. King James later granted the land between the Hudson River and the Delaware River to Sir George Carteret and Lord Berkeley of Stratton. The land was named New Jersey in honor of the channel island of Jersey which had supported the king in the English civil war.
