Southerners believed they were doing what the colonists had done in the American Revolution- seceeding because something they believed in was being taken away. Originally, the Southern states were against a powerful central government, and that struggle manifested itself in the Civil War. The question was about the rights of individuals and states, which the south fully believed they needed. However, by doing so they broke their agreement with the federal government to follow its laws to receive the benefits and protection of the US. Southerners justified their actions by going back to the revolution and their original understanding of rights under the Articles of Confederation.
