AnswerGrew it. MoreSerfs were usually agricultural and grew most of their own food. Often they ate things they could not make, and this is especially true of bread. Many serfs did not eat much bread, and ate their grain as gruel, but those who did eat bread usually did not have time to grind flour for themselves, and very few had ovens. They either had to pay for flour to be ground and rent use of a communal oven, or buy the bread.

Not all serfs were agricultural, however, and those who were not agricultural had to buy their food.

In towns and cities, the laborers were of serf class. They usually did not have a place to have an outdoor fire, and could not have an indoor fire unless they had a brazier, which was too expensive for a serf, or a hearth on a dirt floor, where a fire could be built. There were no fireplaces, because there were no chimneys until the 12th century, and even then they were too costly for serfs.

Characteristics of peasant farming?

Peasant Farming is firstly defined as the cultivation of crops and rearing of animals on a small scale. This farming industry occupies approximately two lots of land. Peasant farmers are found in markets selling produce and are also found in rural areas. They have small farming equipment mostly manual tools/ labor. Peasant Farmers face more problems with crop infestations, pests and diseases and massive loss of crop and animal.
