In villages, brewers were mostly peasants who were good at brewing they were appreciated and valued for their skill, but were not treated all that differently from anyone else.

In towns and cities, brewers were often members of guilds, and as such were respected and had political power. They could even become wealthy. In some republican towns, brewers who were guild masters would have been of high enough standing to run for office as mayor.
