Sherman's "march to the sea" impacted the war in several ways. His march was intended to distract the Army of Virginia and hopefully draw men away from Virginia. This did not happen but the Confederates did send troops to harass the Union columns. Sherman intended to bring the war to the civilians and destroy their will to fight. Many soldiers feared for their families and crops and land and some Confederates even deserted to go home. His march had the similar effect of the air force bombing raids on the cities of Germany.His army was also liberated some prison camps.Custermen
