South Carolina was settled by former sugar cane growers from Barbados who brought slaves with them. In the beginning, it was relatively hard to acquire African slaves, so many of the colonists had to settle for Indian slaves, who were not really cut out for the type of work required on these plantations. For a time, the Carolinians found the lave trade of Indians to the West Indies very profitable. At least 51,000 native slaves were trafficked from the Carolinas.

Without any reason to establish a colony, Spain avoided the Carolinas.
