During the colonial period, Spanish interests centered in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and Western South America. They basically were not concerned about the Carolinas. ("Geography is the handmaiden of history.") They wanted colonies they could reach by boat. West Texas, and the Four Corners region of the United States are far from water transportation, as is East Bolivia and the adjacent part of Argentina, but otherwise the Spanish fleet remained rather close to its colonies.

Without any reason to establish a colony, Spain avoided the Carolinas.
