Many of the 49ers built houses and stayed in California. Many of the poor or average wealth people who found gold became extremely rich, but working to find gold was very hard and dangerous. About one in every five people who got to California to find gold was dead in only 6 months. Either people became really rich, or they died really soon. Most people who came to find gold had slaves work for them which made the work a lot easier. Many people who became rich started big businesses. Some businesses, including Wells Fargo were big parts of gold mining and are still around today.
The 49ers were all of the miners. The California Gold Rush occured in 1849, ergo, the miners, or people who went west in search for gold, were dubbed "'49ers."
