The Holy Crusades began in 1096 when Pope Urban II announced at Clermont that the Latin West would be sending a relieving force to the Byzantine Emperor Alexius I in the east. The First Crusade captured Jerusalem in 1099. The Second Crusade took place in 1147-48 and was led by Emperor Conrad of Germany and King Louis VII of France. The Third Crusade was led by Richard I of England and took place from 1189 and 1191. The Fourth Crusade was lead by Boniface of Monferrat and Dodge Enrico Dandolo against Byzantium in 1204. The Fifth Crusade, led by King John of Jerusalem and Pelagio of Albano took place in from 1217-1221. The Sixth Crusade was led by Emperor Frederick II in 1229. The Seventh Crusade was led by King Louis IX of France from 1248-54. The Eighth and final Crusade was again Louis' and occurred in 1270.
