the feudal system worked and was founded by the Romans's. the king got all the barons and knights to look after some part of the land and put off any wars or anything like that. the king used to turn up at any time to see how the work was doing and in the end they would most likely end up keeping that land, they could build castles and basically it was like they were the actual kings of that part of the country!
