As a preventative measures the Romans first made sure that they had clean water. They stayed away from places such as the Pontine Marshes, with their unhealthy air and swarms of biting insects. They left the city during the hot summers, when plague or disease was apt to break out. (at least the wealthy did) They would also periodically take "purges". Which was a laxative treatment, in the belief that they would flush the bad humors from their bodies.
