Answer Multiple theories exist regarding where the ancestors of Native Americans originated from. The two most popular propose that they traveled from Russia or Japan through Alaska. At the time, either the water level was lower so the Bering Strait did not exist or the migrants boated across it.

Some believe that very early settlers of South America came from Southeast Asian regions such as Australia by the series of South Pacific islands, independent of the Alaska party which later met their descendants.

Finally, some propose a similar method for ancient Europeans crossing the North Atlantic. These sea-based routes are very difficult to verify due to the increased sea level which hides the Coastlines upon which the boaters would have camped.
