The colonists or patriots faced many disadvantages at the outset of the war. They did not have an established government, infrastructure, administrative departments and no national army or navy. However, they had a large population which easily outnumbered British and they were motivated and wanted to win. British on the other hand faced difficulties as they were fighting a war far from home and it took many weeks for their supplies and reinforcements to reach America. They also relied mostly on outsiders like Germans and loyalists to wage fight on their behalf which did not prove to be a good idea. British navy could control ports but could not insure such control in hinterlands.
