While there were some positive interactions in the early years, there was no lasting cooperation between Native Americans and European settlers. Viewed with suspicion as intruders (bringing fatal diseases) the "pilgrims" were often attacked. Retaliation from both groups was equal in viciousness. As more Europeans arrived, conflicts arose over land and Natural Resources. Diseases brought by Europeans wiped out huge numbers of Native Americans. Many innocent women and children died in attacks by both groups against one another The first white child born in the new world was murdered in one of these attacks. .
