The American Revolution ended after the U.S. forces and the French at Yorktown. George Washington learned that a gigantic fleet of French ships were moving toward Virginia in August 1781. The fleet was under command from Admiral Francois Grasse. Grasse planned to prevent Cornwallis from escaping from sea, by obstructing the Chesapeake Bay. While the French forces prevented Cornwallis to escape by sea, Washington and his men were to prevent the British from escaping by land. Approximately 18,000 French and U.S. soldiers and sailors, encircled the British and at Yorktown at the end of September 1781. Cornwallis tried to cross the York river to safety, on the night of October 1781. A storm drove Cornwallis and his troops back and caused them to capitulate the next day. On October, 1781, Cornwallis finally surrendered.

Even though Britain was defeated at the Battle of Yorktown, the Revolutionary War had not ended just yet. Fighting continued for two more years. After those two years, Britain started to talk about peace with the Americans.
