How did the U boats have an effect in World War 2?

During the first World War, German U-boats helped Germany overcome, to some extent, the naval superiority of the British war fleet. These submarines struck terror in the hearts of sailors and commercial shipping passengers in the Northern Atlantic Ocean. Ironically, the "success" of a German submarine in sinking the passenger ship, the Lusitania, helped fuel the entry later on of the USA into the war.
