In my opinion, it gave Americans a sense of complacency. The U.S. cut defense spending and on intelligence and fell under the false belief that world peace was at hand and that Russia was going to be our good buddy.

Peace was not at hand; there's been genocide, civil war, internation war, global wars against radical Islam.

Russia is no closer to being our friend than they were in the 1980's. The only thing that changed in Russia was the economic model and the name. Russia still does the same old tricks they were doing when they were the USSR.

I think Americans are becoming aware that the end of the Cold War really wasn't as great as we think it was. The only good thing about it was that Communism was set back for a while...but only a while.
