The colonies succeeded in winning their independence through the Revolutionary War as a result of several factors. The character of the colonists was one such factor, as their will to endure and their resourcefulness in and through defeat as well as victory were essential to waging prolonged war. The overconfidence of the British was another factor. Still another was the support provided to the Americans by European competitors of the British; France, in particular, provided much-needed help in the American bid for independence.
