When you analyze their activities they played a small role in creating havoc with British forces. The Boston Tea Party was a spontaneous event push by Sam Adams because the British LOWERED the tea tax and this cost Adams and Hancock money. They were the biggest smugglers in the colonies and the they smuggled Dutch tea. The British lowering the tax made their tea more expensive than what the British sold. The Tea Party made the king mad which meant he sent more troops to the colonies and closed the harbor of Boston. The result was the Son's of Liberty started collecting more powder and guns and when the British caught wind that they were in Lexington they sent a patrol. The night of April 19, 1775 was the first shots of the war, so yes they did play a part. It was a matter of time that an event would take place.
