Much of the time, the rooms were NOT heated. They were cold, you wore a lot of clothes, and slept under a lot of covers. Fireplaces or firepits were sometimes used for some heat. Some of the Roman houses used a holocaust- a type of furnace where the chimneys ran beneath the floor, heating the floor. Later- in the 1700s- people used wood and coal stoves.
