There was no urbanization in this time. This is a modern idea and term. People were born in an area and stayed there until they died. Very seldom did they get beyond 5 or 10 miles from home. When walking five miles that will take a day or so. If going by horse that will take a day's ride. There were no lights at night so people didn't go anywhere at night unless they knew the area very well otherwise it could mean death. In 1345 the plague hit Europe and when over half of the population of a town or city is gone in days that means people don't venture away from home. Over 3/4 of the population was gone by the time plague was over. This left gaps in the society. The means and the will for people to move just wasn't there, so there was no urbanization that took place.
