More than 7000 years.
Most simply, the hostages in the Iran Hostage Crisis were US citizens. As a result, the US intervened in order to protect their citizens. As for why Iranians overran the US Embassy and took its workers as hostages, this was in retaliation for the US failure to render the deposed Shah back to the Iranian Revolutionaries for "justice", which would have been a kangaroo court and execution.

The linkage is slilm but it has been argued (coward) was a political-type record an analogy of the then current Iran Hostage Crisis, the Coward"s wife Becky being analogous to the Hostages held. By a similar token the equally offbeat- as far as I know it is the only popular song ( as opposed to some back-take cuts on seldom-aired Johnny Cash albums) that deals not with Prisoners as such , but the plight of an Ex-Con- Tie a Yellow Ribbon. The song specifically identifies the narrator as an ex-con who did three years in prison. The nature of the crime is not specified. The song is a sympathy bid for a cause most people find repellent . In popular usage this was extended to the successful conclusion of the Iran Hostage crisis- and the song was somewhat overplayed. the analogy is off-beam and off base. the narrator of (Yellow Ribbon) was an ex con, not a POW or hostage in a near-war situation. True Yellow ribbons were associated with the Cavalry, but that is something else. Who would advertise being related to a jailbird?
In 1953 the US and the UK overthrew the Prime Minister of Iran, who was legally and lawfully elected by the Iranian people, and backed the Shah as the totalitarian monarch. He was extremely unpopular and only managed to retain his power with help from the US until the Iranian Revolution in 1979. The revolutionaries blamed the US for the 1953 coup and never forgave them for it, resulting in the hostage crisis of 1979. The CIA director behind the 1953 coup, Allen Dulles, was also responsible for the Guatemalan coup of 1954 and the Bay of Pigs Invasion and was forced to resign in 1961.
