In Western Europe, books were copied mostly by members of monastic communities during the dark ages, as far as we know.Our records of the Dark Ages are very incomplete, which is why the ages were called dark. Some ancient Roman institutions survived in this time, and there may have been a number of commercial scribes. There is no record of them, as far as I know, but there were records kept of secular events, and we do not know who most of the scribes responsible for this were. Some actions of the Roman Senate, for example, continued to be recorded until at least 603, and this may have been done by secular scribes. And we know of Dark Age authors who were most probably not clergy. It is hard to imagine that Beowulf was written by a monk.
