Martin Luther King, Jr. was a great speaker and social activist. However, in his writings he denied the deity of Christ, His virgin birth and His resurrection. He lumped all religions into the same class. So it appears he was not a Christian in the born-again evangelical sense.

Martin Luther King Jr. did not become a monk; he was a Baptist minister and civil rights leader. His religious upbringing and education shaped his beliefs and commitment to social justice. King was inspired by the teachings of Jesus and the principles of nonviolence, which he applied to the civil rights movement. His role as a minister allowed him to advocate for equality and inspire others through his faith.
He told them the truth: they were being greedy and almost entirely the opposite of what they should have been as Christian leaders. Nobody likes being told they are wrong, especially when they know it to be true and when people might start to realise and do something about it. In their case, the easiest way out was to simply excommunicate him and denounce him as a heretic, or an evildoer of many types.

The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ. The Lutheran Church was founded by Martin Luther, a mere man. The Catholics feel they have kept the teachings and traditions passed down to us intact while Luther picked and chose what his church would follow, tossing out those articles of faith he had a personal disagreement with.
