Everything about Norse mythology relates to the natural world in some way. All the characters in the Eddas & Sagas; be they Aesir, men or Giants were personifications of natural forces and influences. In this case, Thor was the personification of thunder. He would strike the ground with his mighty hammer Miolnir when he was angry, producing the explosive sound we know. His arrival was heralded by lightening, which was personified by his steed. (The steeds in Norse mythology often had more than four legs & could run incredibly fast. They were also noted for breathing fire & sparks from their nostrils as they ran)

Thor was a god in Norse mythology. How you would view his origin depends on how you view mythology. If mythology and religion are a social construct, Thor was devised by Norse storytellers as a part of their elaborate worldview. If mythology is to be believed, Thor was born to Jord, a giantess, and Odin, the Aesir patron god.
