There are many honor guards in the US Army. The basic tenent of all honor guards is that the soldier sets himself or herself above their peers. Traditionally, honor guards were selected from the best soldiers in a unit. The ultimate honor guard of the United States Army is The Old Guard.

The Old Guard Mission Statement:

"The 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) conducts memorial affairs to honor our fallen comrades, and ceremonies and special events to represent the Army, communicating its story to our Nation's citizens and the world. On order, conducts defense support of civil authorities in the National Capitol Region."

Requirements for assignment to The Old Guard:

  • Males must be 5' 10" or taller. Females must be 5' 8" or taller.
  • GT Score of 110 or higher.
  • APFT score of 250 or higher.
  • Present an outstanding military apearance in uniform.
  • No previous USMJ action.

Mental breakdown during basic training .what then?

Each has his own weakness when entering basic training. You'd be surprised what catches you off-guard. The thing that caught me was the fact that I was a much older recruit and I realized that I was in a pool of innocent kids training to rush into battle, and these kids didn't really realize they could die. You'll see a few people crack. And it's not all at the same time. And it's for different reasons.
