At its height in the early 19th century, Napoleon's empire stretched across much of Europe, including France, parts of Italy, the Iberian Peninsula, the Low Countries, and much of Central Europe. It also included territories in the Balkans and significant areas of present-day Poland and the German states. The empire was marked by a series of satellite states and client kingdoms, extending French influence across the continent. However, it ultimately fragmented following the failed invasion of Russia in 1812 and subsequent defeats in the Napoleonic Wars.
