The idea of civic duty and the importance of citizen participation in governance also reflect Roman ideals, emphasizing the role of citizens in shaping their government.
A democracy is when people elect other people to do make decisions for them in government. A republic is when everyone gets a say in every issue. For example in a democracy people go out and vote for certain people that have similar views in politics as you, but in a the roman republic one day every week all the men would come to a court room and vote on all the issues. The reason why a lot of countries decided to be democratic instead of republic is because most citizens don't want to be that involved in government and/or they don't have time to meet every week.

No. A Democracy or a Republic is not affected by political parties (even though the names do sound similar to the main political parties in America). Anyway, America has a Republic form of government, which means that people elect government officials, such as Senators, to vote on issues. Being a Democrat or a Republican would not affect this.
