A democracy is when people elect other people to do make decisions for them in government. A republic is when everyone gets a say in every issue. For example in a democracy people go out and vote for certain people that have similar views in politics as you, but in a the Roman Republic one day every week all the men would come to a court room and vote on all the issues. The reason why a lot of countries decided to be democratic instead of republic is because most citizens don't want to be that involved in government and/or they don't have time to meet every week.
Republic and democracy are two different things. A Republic can be a democracy, just as a constitutional monarchy today can be a democracy. Democracy existed in the Roman Republic, as it had three different assemblies of the citizens (Centuriate, Tribal, Plebeian). Athens went through phases - monarchy, oligarchy, limited democracy, radical democracy.

The Roman Empire was not a democracy, there were no votes and no voted elected officials. It was however designed as a Republic which had appointed representation, Senators.
The Greeks invented the idea of democracy. However, their concept of democracy was different. Nowadays we have indirect democracy, which means that the people elect representatives of the people and it is them who vote on bills. The Greek had direct democracy, which means that it was the people themselves, gathered in the assembly of the people, who voted on bills. Demorcacy means power by the people in Greek. Both the Greeks and the Romans had the concept of citizenship and the idea that citizens had rights. During the Roman Republic and in the Greek democracies, this included the right to vote. It has to be noted that not all Greek states had democracies and in that other states (such as kingdoms, oligarchies and tyrannies) there was no voting. During the period of rule by emperors which followed the Roman Republic the people no longer voted and there was absolute rule by emperors. During the Roman Republic there was also the power of veto. The idea for American veto system came from the Romans.
They are totally different and not comparable. The Roman Republic existed 2,400 to 1,800 years before the creation of the US. We are are talking about totally different eras and totally different societies and cultures. Also note that a Republic is a state not ruled by kings, emperors, princes, or dukes. The term Republic means just that. A Republic can be a democracy or a dictatorship. Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia and most of dictatorships which exist or have existed in the modern world are/were republics.

The Roman Republic was a republic fully because it was not ruled by a king or other aristocrats. This is the definition of a republic. That is all you need to be a republic. A republic can be a democracy, an oligarchy or a dictatorship, so long as it is not ruled by a king or other aristocrats.

Technically, the Romans had a republic, not a democracy. Romans voted for their political leaders (consuls, praetors, tribunes, aediles, and quaestors). Elected politicians gained entry into the Senate, the ruling political body of the Republic. The elected officials also ran the military campaigns.

Rome never had an egalitarian state. Rome was an oligarchy, even during the Republic when there was a degree of democracy. In fact, during the Republic there was a plebeian art, which was an artistic expression of the plebeian class which was distinct from the art favoured by the aristocracy.
