The Maurya Empire was a large portion of India as well as Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. It existed from 322 BCE-180 BCE. The Maurya had heavy taxes on those they conquered.

Buddhism and Jainism were the major religions but there were Hindus as well. The Maurya preferred a Persian style of art and building. The Maurya traded with the Greeks and other areas.

Gupta Empire was founded by Sri Chandragupta in 320 CE. They ruled a much smaller area which was mainly in India. The Gupta empire was more decentalised with local leaders. The Gupta were mainly Hindu. The Gupta were were very much into a variety of arts and literature, and astronomy. This was the golden age of India.
