The Colosseum in Rome is an arena and theretofore it is different from modern stadium. It was an arena for the gladiatorial games. The arena itself was 83 meters by 48 meters (272 by 157 feet). It had a wooden floor which covered the hypogeum,an elaborate two-level underground network of tunnels and cages where the gladiators and the animals stayed before the contests. Access to the arena for the caged animals and for props was through eighty vertical shafts. There were larger hinged platforms, which were for lifting called elephants.

How did the Colosseum benefit Rome?

The gladiatorial fights of the ancient world have had a mostly symbolic effect upon the ages that followed them: they have been seen as representing inspirational bravery, the power of games for society, cruelty and savagery, and much more. It should be noted that such 'symbolic' influence has often had a moral dimension attached, with the gladiatorial games being generally seen by subsequent observers as a sign of moral decay or inadequacy.
