Well, if you want to become a historian or an archaeologist, it is of course very important. But other than that, without history we wouldn't know why we're living this way and how we're living the way we are.

For example- in the countries such as the US, Australia and New Zealand, it's important that the citizens of those countries know why they live there, and where they originated from. The citizens living there now have connections that go waaayy back to British families, that travelled across the seas to discover the new countries. Learning about old tribes and traditions in those countries also help to give an idea of which people they share the country with (depending if they're still around or not).

Although that's one specific reason why, there are many others too.
