I served actve duty from 1959 to Dec 1962. I was in active reserve from 1962 to 1967. I never served in Vietnam. Am I considered a Vietnam veteran?

Check with TODAYs VA. They change their rules (federal laws) frequently. They up-date them, change them, add to them, and delete them. During the Vietnam days, reserves (Army and Air National Guard & USAR/USNR/USMCR/etc) normally did not receive veteran status credit for active duty TRAINING days. They did receive vet status if they performed active duty for OTHER THAN TRAINING purposes. Examples: Reservists & Guardsmen of the Colorado/New Mexico/Iowa/and New York AIR National Guard are Vietnam Vets because they flew their National Guard F100 Super Sabre jets in Vietnam for one tour (they flew approximately 30,000 combat sorties). Kentucky & New Hampshire sent their Army National Guard 2/138th Field Artillery & 3/197th Field guns to Vietnam; these men are Vietnam veterans.

It is especially applied to those who served for an entire career, usually of 20 years or more, but may be applied for someone who has only served one tour of duty. Why are men and woman who return from war called veterans?

Anyone can be a veteran of anything. A military person who never went to war or has never seen combat (action), is a veteran of the military. ANY person is a veteran of any occupation; a doctor, policeman, scientist, store owner, baseball player, swimmer, fisherman, mechanic, ANYBODY is a veteran of their occupation or activity, if they've done it long enough. Example: He's a veteran doctor; he's been a doctor for 20 years. Or he's a veteran cop, he's been a policeman for 10 years. But it's also true that the word "veteran" can be misleading: for example: "He's a veteran policeman." This could mean to some people that he's a veteran of the military, and is currently employed as a policeman. So, one has to listen to how the phrase is said, and/or possibly ask for clarification. Bottom line: Veteran means someone whose been doing something for awhile (at anything).
