Auschwitz, the setting of the majority of the story, is important because it's the one of the harshest concentration camp created by the Germans.
Shmuel, a Jewish boy, is forced to live in Auschwitz and Bruno, a German boy, is also forced to live there as well (this is because his father, the commandant got transferred to Auschwitz and the whole family had to follow him).
work is liberty.
The exact year is not given, but a German soldier implies when he's speaking with Father that the time period is after 1942. The father, Ralf, is based on Rudolf Höss, the first commandant of Auschwitz. Still, the book is fictional with some historical points. In the beginning of the novel, a soldier implies it was set during 1942. On May 1, 1940, Höss became the commandant at Auschwitz. In June 1941, he started the gassing. The book says "a year later after moving", therefore, it in 1942, Höss wife found out about the gas chambers. (fact) It also states months (years?) after the fictional Bruno dies, The Last Chapter states Höss was captured, and then was later hanged. (the book never mentions this) The beginning of the book is set in Berlin, Germany; and the rest (majority) is Auschwitz. ALSO, it states Bruno and Shmuel are 9 and their birthday was in 1934, making the year around 1942/1943; depending on if they have had their birthday.
Concentration camps, forced labor camps and extermination camps. From late 1941 on most of the Jews were sent to extermination camps, where they were killed within 12-48 hours of arrival.

I don't think so
Not scary, no. Just tragic! However there are parts of the novel which could be described as scary.
She was a little scared. but she kinda knew what it was already.
In "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas," five challenging words might include "Auschwitz," "dachau," "furlough," "Nazi," and "concentration." These terms are tied to the historical context of World War II and the Holocaust, which can be difficult for younger readers to fully grasp. Understanding these words enhances comprehension of the novel's themes of innocence, friendship, and the horrors of war.
It was published in 2006 by David Fickling Books.
Gretel is 12 years-old.

Germany
Although Bruno is FICTIONAL, Rudolf Höss is really the first commandant of Auschwitz. Unlike Treblinka, Höss developed a method to trick people into thinking they were taking showers. At Treblinka, the people knew they were going to be gassed. The naïve part of Bruno is true, children are naïve and are un-hateful. The entire Holocaust part is real.
